IBM Opens Up SameTime- What's That Mean?
Tue, 01/22/2008 - 01:20 — achis
Here at Greatwebmeetings.com, we're pretty neutral on which platform you might want to use. Let the different platforms beat the heck out of each other, we're about using whichever tools you choose better.
Oh, but things just got interesting. IBM has bought the small player WebDialogs and is blending it with their Sametime product. Users of Sametime know it's a good product, but was really only useful for internal communication in companies that use Lotus products- using it with outside cusotmers or vendors was nigh on impossible, which meant that folks using the Lotus-centric product needed a second platform to communicate with the world beyond their firewalls, which meant extra cost, training and hassle.
Ordinarily I wouldn't care much... there is no shortage of choices for web presentations and I'm not much of a follower of corporate blather... but here's the intriguing thing: Cisco has WebEx, which requires downloads and plugins, and now IBM has moved into that territory with a completely web-based presentation platform. Things could get downright fascinating in the next few months.
Of course no matter which platform you use, it's not gonna matter a hoot if it's not used effectively and that's what we're here for. Meanwhile, the Cisco/IBM games will make it worth watching at least til Spring brings baseball season.
